Classical Triumphs Paul Barnes

October 8, 2011
7:30 p.m.

Lima native Paul Barnes returns to our stage to celebrate the bicentennial of Franz Liszt’s birth with the stunning and emotional Piano Concerto No. 2.  Our opening gala begins joyously with guest conductor Clyde Rauch leading our orchestra in a buoyant polka, and concludes with Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5, as remarkable for its grandeur and beauty as for its heroic boldness.

Concert Dedication:
We join orchestras across the globe by dedicating this concert to the life and legacy of Daniel Pearl. Our performance is part of the 10th Annual Daniel Pearl World Music Days -- a global network of tributes to Mr. Pearl and all the visionary men and women who use the power of music to lift people of different backgrounds and beliefs above the differences that set us apart. Through our music, we reaffirm our conviction that humanity will triumph and harmony will prevail. Daniel Pearl, the Wall Street Journal journalist and musician kidnapped and murdered by terrorists in Pakistan just four months after 9/11, was a classically-trained violinist, as well as a fiddler and mandolin player, who joined musical groups wherever he traveled. World Music Days commemorates his October 10th birthday and carries on his mission of connecting diverse people through words and music.
