The Romance of Spring
February 18, 2012
7:30 p.m.
Join us for an exhilarating breath of springtime romance, beginning with the exuberant vitality of Berlioz’s Le Corsaire Overture. Piano soloist and winner of the 2009 Friends of the Symphony Young Artists Competition Scott Cuellar will delight with the 24 variations of Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on the Theme of Paganini, by turns playful, melancholy, militaristic and dramatic, and characterized by a soaring, soulful melody and structural ingenuity. We conclude our tour de force of Romantic composers with Schumann’s Spring Symphony, a buoyant, exultant composition written soon after his marriage for his “spring of love.”
