This special Friday evening all-strings concert opens with one of the most radiant English orchestral works of the 20th Century as Vaughan Williams’s Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis breathes life into an ancient church hymn in a series of soaring variations. Grieg’s Holberg Suite, based on the baroque dance suite, bursts with Romantic virtuosity and folk themes with a lightness of touch that makes it the perfect complement to Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings. Perhaps the most romantic of Tchaikovsky’s works, this Serenade is truly a piece from the heart: tender, sublimely expressive, full of charm, and classically elegant.
