The Lima Symphony Orchestra
Presents Romantic Rhapsody

(October 30, 2009 Lima, Ohio).  The Lima Symphony Orchestra will perform the greatest music of the Romantic and Post-Romantic eras during Romantic Rhapsody on Saturday, November 7, 2009 at 8 p.m. in the Crouse Performance Hall of the Veteran’s Memorial Civic and Convention Center.  Guest pianist Tavit Tashjian will join our professional orchestra in performing Edvard Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor.  This passionate, lyric piece, inspired by Norwegian folk music, is one of the most famous piano concerti of all time. 

Also making a special guest appearance with our orchestra will be local attorney Kevin Hawley, who will by playing the cymbals, kettle drum and triangle during Johann Strauss’s Radetzky March.  Mr. Hawley was the highest bidder at last year’s LSO auction, purchasing the right to perform with our professional musicians during an LSO grand series concert.

Our program will begin with Richard Wagner’s dramatic Flying Dutchman Overture, and will also feature Johannes Brahms’ lively Hungarian Dance No. 4, Tomaso Albinoni’s beautiful Adagio in G minor, and Giuseppe Verdi’s ghostly Ballet Music from MacBeth.

Tavit Tashjian           

At just 22 years of age, the young Cyprus born Armenian pianist Tavit Tashjian is already carving a name for himself as a very bright new star on the musical horizon.  Mr. Tashjian began playing the piano at the age of age of six in Los Angeles and gave his first public performances within a year. Since that time, he has appeared in many solo recitals and as a guest artist with numerous orchestras.  He began his education with a bachelor’s degree in Piano Performance from the internationally renowned Toradze Piano Studio at Indiana University South Bend.  From there, he continued his studies at Arizona State University.  His teachers have included Dr. Baruch Meir, Marcelo Cesena, Alexander Toradze, and Dr. Caio Pagano.

Mr. Tashjian was awarded first prize at the Ann Walling Competition and has also participated in many master classes, including those with Andre Watts, Christopher O’Riley, Karyl Louwenaar, Leonidas Lipovetzky, Leonard Mastrogiacomo and Nelita True, among others.

Kevin Hawley

Kevin Hawley is a litigator and appellate lawyer who spent 17 years as an associate and then partner in the economic and regulatory litigation group in the Washington, D.C. office of Sidley & Austin before moving to Ohio.  He is now a Distinguished Practitioner in Residence at Ohio Northern University’s Claude W. Pettit College of Law.   Mr. Hawley has litigated cases before federal district courts and courts of appeals, the United States Supreme Court and major federal agencies.  He holds a J.D. from the Duke University School of Law and a B.A. from Syracuse University.

This will be Mr. Hawley’s first appearance with a symphony orchestra.
