folklore and fusion

October 22, 2022 // 7:30pm

Listen as the Lima Symphony tells captivating tales from the near to far East through musical fantasy. Opening this incredible season are the subtle and varied sounds of the Indian Tabla, drums that composer Dinuk Wijeratne describes as being able to speak – almost as if they have a tongue. Performed by master tabla player Sandeep Das, the compelling complexity of North Indian classical music combines seamlessly with the orchestra in unexpected ways. Completing this musical voyage is Rimsky-Korsakov’s Romantic masterpiece “Scheherazade”, inspired by folklore from One Thousand and One Arabian Nights.

Dinuk Wijeratne // Concerto for Tabla and Orchestra | Sandeep Das, tabla solo

Nikolia Rimsky-Korsakov // Scherherazade | Michael Houff, violin solo
