Why a Two-Year Search?
One of the questions we've heard most often from our community is: Why is the Music Director search taking two years?
It's a great question, and we'd like to share the thinking behind this important decision.
A Thoughtful Approach to the Future
When Maestro Andrew Crust and the Lima Symphony Orchestra Board agreed in October that the 2025–2026 season would be his final season with the Orchestra, the Board immediately began planning for the future.
Selecting a Music Director is one of the most significant decisions an orchestra can make. Rather than rushing the process, the LSO chose to conduct a comprehensive two-year nationwide search to ensure we find the right artistic leader to guide the Orchestra into its next chapter.
Why Two Seasons?
The search is designed to give us the time to experience each finalist in a meaningful way.
During the 2026–2027 season, six outstanding guest conductors will serve as finalists in our Season of Discovery. These conductors were selected from an accomplished pool of candidates who have previously been finalists for Music Director positions at orchestras similar in size and scope to the Lima Symphony Orchestra. This allowed our search committee to assemble an exceptional group of artistic leaders for our audiences to experience.
At the same time, the LSO opened the Music Director position to applicants nationwide and received nearly 100 applications from conductors interested in leading the Orchestra. From that impressive pool, six additional finalists will be selected to appear during the 2027–2028 season.
More Than a Concert
Choosing a Music Director is about much more than conducting a single performance.
Each finalist will spend an immersive residency week in Lima, rehearsing and performing with the Orchestra while also engaging with local organizations, meeting audience members, and building relationships throughout the community.
These residencies allow the Board, musicians, staff, and community to get to know each candidate—not only as a conductor, but also as a leader, collaborator, and ambassador for the arts.
Your Voice Matters
This search belongs to our entire community.
Throughout both seasons, concertgoers and community members will have opportunities to share feedback online and help shape the future of the Lima Symphony Orchestra. Your experiences and perspectives will be an important part of the decision-making process.
A Season of Discovery
A Season of Discovery is about more than selecting a new Music Director. It's an opportunity to welcome inspiring artistic voices, experience extraordinary performances, and celebrate the future of the Lima Symphony Orchestra together.
We're excited to have you join us on this journey.
